The Yerxa-Field House at 37 Lancaster Street in Cambridge, MA has 10 fireplaces.  The house was built in 1888 and the fireplaces are beautiful examples of Victorian style tile, masonry, and woodwork.

Every fireplace is different – the tiles or stone vary, a variety of woods are used and some of the detail is handcarved, there are handsome decorative  firebacks like the one you see here, and amazing andirons that in many cases match the light fixtures in the room.  It’s very hard to pick a favorite!

Cambridge real estate buyers will appreciate the proximity to Kendall Square, MIT, the Red Line and the Green Line, and the Galleria Mall.  There is convenient access from this side of the city to Memorial Drive, Storrow Drive, Route 93, Boston, and Logan Airport.

History of 71  Fulkerson St. Cambridge MA

There are four townhouses and 34 units in a reclaimed brick factory building.  All the marketing that I’ve seen for the complex refers to the building as a “former barrel factory”.  The Goepper Brothers established their barrel manufacturing business on Ninth Street – the former name of Fulkerson Street – in 1882.  The factory buildings were, if not at #71, right next door.  It was a large and successful operation.

Records suggest, however, that 71 Fulkerson was built in  1920 as a warehouse building for the Revere Sugar Refinery.

Newton Home Built by Tough as Nails builder Cindy Stumpo

Tonight’s the premiere of HGTV’s new show “Tough As Nails” featuring Massachusetts luxury home builder Cindy Stumpo.

Stumpo’s company, C. Stumpo Development, builds multi-million dollar houses in Greater Boston, many in Newton and Brookline.

With the show that WGBH’s Emily Rooney described as “This Old House Meets Jersey Shore” and a star characterized as the “sassy builder of haute homes” I’ll bet HGTV has a winner on its hands. I know I’ll be watching.

The half-hour show premieres tonight on HGTV at 9:30 pm and repeats at 12:30 am.

Glass Factory Condos – 169 Monsignor O’Brien Highway

 The Glass Factory at 169 Monsignor O’Brien Highway in Cambridge is an eight-story building with 104 condos.  The condos were renovated in 2004 when the building was converted from apartments. There are two-room studios, one and two-bedroom condos.

While the name suggests that the building was used as a factory of some sort I haven’t been able to document that.  Records show that the building was originally an office building built in 1925, owned by the Boston and Maine Railroad.  I’d love to learn about the factory connection if anybody knows the scoop.

The Glass Factory is in East Cambridge near the Lechmere T station and very close to downtown Boston. The Cambridgeside Galleria mall, the Charles River, and the Museum of Science are nearby.

Residents have created on online forum for the building.
