Reading Is Sexy

Spotted in the parking lot at Whole Foods:

Is It?

Is It?

Not sure if that’s so but I’m willing to entertain the idea.

Here are some more bumper stickers seen around Cambridge:

Happy Patriots Day

Old North Bridge Concord

Old North Bridge Concord

I grew up in Concord so today is one of my favorite holidays – Patriots Day. And happily, in the age of the Monday holiday, this year Patriot’s Day falls on the “real” day – April 19th.

Today marks the 235th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord.  There will be reenactments and parades in Lexington and Concord.

In Massachusetts the Monday holiday is also Marathon Day – today is the 114th Boston Marathon.

What's 26.2 about?

What's 26.2 about?

Last year when I was just starting this blog I went out in search of Obama bumper stickers.  Along the way I kept seeing these mysterious stickers and wondered what does 26.2 mean?

I remembered coming across those inexplicable “420 friendly” references in Craigslist postings but since most of these bumper stickers were on cars in the Whole Foods parking lot I figured it meant something else entirely.

Sure enough – 26.2 is a bumper sticker for marathoners.  A marathon is 26.2 miles in length.  Yikes. Good luck to all the runners and Happy Patriots Day to everyone!

READ – Cambridge Bumper Sticker

I love bumper stickers! If I wasn’t a real estate agent my temptation would be to cover my car with them – if only to cover up the scars and nicks on my bumper that result from the game of bumper cars that’s played on Cambridge streets.  But bumper stickers are good for more than camouflage – they allow us to put a bit of our selves out there for all to see, to take a stance, make a proclamation.

In Cambridge the messages proclaimed on bumpers are varied and fascinating.  While I’m out on Cambridge real estate tours or just out taking photographs (my new pursuit launched in an effort to spice up these pages) I can’t help but snap pictures of some of the bumper stickers I come across. So began the Bumper Sticker Seen Around Cambridge collection.

Reading happens to be one of my lifelong loves so I was tickled to spot this bumper sticker.  Actually do you call these bumper stickers?  These oval stickers, often with inscrutable acronyms, are a subset of sorts of traditional bumperstickers.

Like my last featured Don’t Litter bumpersticker this “READ” bumpersticker isn’t quite what it appears – or rather more than it appears.  I chuckled when I noticed that it was on the truck of a painter with the last name Read.  It was fun – and good marketing – since weeks later I still remembered his name despite my inability to remember names on most occasions.

And in the marvelous, serendipitous way of the internet I was able to find Nicholas Read’s painting website online.  As luck would have it he does oil portraits of houses – and pets too.  His website is really worth checking out – his work is beautiful and has a fun local angle as well.  Read showcases some of his paintings of Cambridge and Somerville houses on his site.  It’s a tough call – when I save up my money – do I get a painting of my house or of Champ my cat?

No Littering – Bumper Stickers Seen Around Cambridge

One of the  many things I love about living in Cambridge are the variety of bumper stickers that you spot on cars as you travel around the city.  Believe me – bumper stickers just aren’t the same out in the burbs.  Cambridge has really good bumper stickers.  A myriad of opinions, obsessions, jokes, causes and more are displayed on our bumpers.

So here’s the first installment in what I plan to feature regularly – Bumper Stickers Seen Around Cambridge.

When I spotted this bumper sticker down the street I was psyched since I hate litterbugs. The amount of trash thrown on Cambridge streets and sidewalks blows my mind and infuriates me.  It’s my new hobby – picking up trash as I walk around town.

As you can see, it turned out to be a bumper sticker promoting the spaying of dogs and cats.  I know that this is a cause dear to the heart of anybody who works in animal shelters and sees how many pets are abandoned.  I actually have mixed feelings.   I’ve found it almost impossible to find a kitten nowadays – if an ad is posted every kitten is spoken for almost immediately.

Still – a bumper sticker with DON”T LITTER in big letters is one I’d be happy to have on my car.

Actually this is the second Bumper Stickers Seen Around Cambridge post.  Here’s the first:

Bumper Stickers – Election Day 2009

It’s an historic day and there are a lot of very happy people in Cambridge.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden won 62% of the vote in Massachusetts in November.

In Cambridge, the percentage was quite a bit higher as 88% of voters cast their ballot for the Obama-Biden ticket, second only to Aquinnah, a small town on Martha’s Vineyard, where 90% of the 311 voters cast votes for Obama.

Cantabridgians often broadcast their thoughts, obsessions, affiliations and more on their bumpers.  Here’s a sampling of the amazing variety of Obama bumper stickers found on cars in Cambridge this week. There was nary a McCain sticker to be found though I do remember seeing at least one or two over the last year.

And if you’d like one of the “Yes We Did” Shepard Faery bumper stickers like the one at the center of the collage – you can get one (for free!) at this site.
